UX for Good: Building NeighborAid with Empathy

Ann Arbor, MI

Date

March 2025 - April 2025

Role

Designer

Project type

Mobile Application

NeighborAid is an independently developed, community-focused resource-sharing application designed to facilitate mutual support and everyday generosity among neighbors. Grounded in principles of inclusive and empathetic design, the platform enables users to offer or request household items, personal services, transportation, or small favors—with ease and dignity.

The concept was inspired by the “Buy Nothing” Facebook Groups, where residents organically shared goods, services, and time—often with minimal infrastructure and significant community need. Drawing from the genuine desire for connection and support observed in these groups, NeighborAid was created to streamline this exchange through a dedicated, accessible platform.

Beyond its practical utility, NeighborAid actively promotes community engagement and volunteerism by transforming simple exchanges into opportunities for meaningful connection. By encouraging neighbors to lend their time, skills, or resources, the app fosters a culture of trust, collaboration, and shared responsibility—empowering individuals to contribute to a more resilient and compassionate local network.
